During the 1960's, Substantial gas reserves were discovered beneath the waters of Brunei Darussalam. Gas liquefaction technology was in its infancy, and there was little experience shipping liquid-gas over long distances.

The Brunei LNG (BLNG) plant, the first in the Western Pacific, was completed in 1972. The project was an ambitious joint venture between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Shell Overseas Trading Limited and Mitsubishi Corporation. The project pioneered the large-scale liquefaction and transportation of natural gas, helping to establish LNG as a global energy source.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), a liquid at -162°C, is not directly useable by the customer. It must first be converted back to natural gas. About 7.5% of all gas piped onshore never leaves Brunei Darussalam. It is consumed mainly in two ways – as fuel for power stations and for household usage.   Brunei LNG (BLNG) aspires to excel in all aspects of operation: social, economic and environment. BLNG’s commitment to sustainable development contributes to the continued prosperity of the company, the community, and the country.

Gas is the primary cooking fuel in Brunei Darussalam and most of it is sold as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplied by the LNG plant. LPG is a by-product from the production of LNG.
